Taif's economy
Summer retreat, roses and an industrial city
Taif Governorate's economy relies mainly on tourism and trade. Visitors head to Al Hada and Al Shafa in summer for the mild weather, which keeps hotels, furnished apartments, parks and markets busy. The city hosts well-known events, including the Taif Rose Festival and Souq Okaz. Reports put the Rose Festival at about one million visitors in 2022.
Roses are an industry too. Farms in Al Hada and Al Shafa produce hundreds of millions of roses a year, and the governorate has more than 70 distilleries. Their activity follows the spring picking season, when workers and visitors peak at the same time.
On the industrial side, the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON) opened Taif Industrial City in 2020 on 11 million square metres, with a contract for ready-built factories there. Taif is also a land stop for pilgrims arriving from the east, and the Al Hada road links it to Makkah over about 87 km, which gives its hotels and housing extra demand in season.
