Waad Al Shamal is an integrated mining and industrial city in the Umm Wual area, north-east of Turaif, overseen by the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON) in cooperation with the Public Investment Fund. Its first industrial projects were inaugurated in 2018, and in February 2025 the regional governor inaugurated projects worth about SAR 29 billion, including a new phosphate project.
Projects like these bring many contractors and suppliers, each with equipment yards, warehouses and worker housing. Because sites are far from towns, gate and store guarding on the night shift and vehicle-based security rounds matter more.
Arar is the seat of the regional emirate, with government offices, administrative buildings, hospitals, schools and markets, and it appears among the industrial cities overseen by MODON. The region also includes the governorates of Rafha, Turaif and Al Uwayqilah, each with its own services and facilities.
